Abstract:
In this paper we examine the trends in regional labour pro ductivity differentials in Italy over the period 1980-95 using data with a disaggregation in 16 industries. Overall, the results of both ß-convergence e s-convergence tests lead to reject the hypothesis of convergence, with the opposite hypothesis of growing regional dif ferentials often appearing compatible with the data. The only par tial exceptions are sectors characterized by either high capital en dowments (petroleum and coal, chemicals) or peculiar market structure (finance and insurance).
