Abstract: The increasing degree of flexibility in the labour market, is revealed, in Italy, by the development of a new category of temporary workers, called parasubordinati. In order to identify and quantify this phenomenon, an empirical analysis, based on the data of the Italian Social Security Institute, was undertaken. Future pensions of this workers constitute the focus of the analysis. Parasubordinati are characterised by a low payroll tax rate, and by generally low income levels, within a context of inadequate social protection and discontinuous careers. The result is a prospectively insufficient retirement income for a growing fraction of the labour force.
