British and Italian Universities and the Anglo-Saxon Model

Abstract: In the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, British Universities were subjected to a sequence of changes that transformed their organisation and management. There are clear parallels with the challenges presented at the present time to Italian Universities. With discussions of the implementation of the so called Anglo-Saxon model to Italian Universities the paper argues that the particular characteristics of change within the British system may only be understood through the British Institutional structure, wherein outcomes arise from extended discussions between the Universities and Government. The history of change since 1980’s is summarized and recent changes are also discussed.
