Abstract:
Citizens may choose not to vote when the candidates are too similar to each other (indifference) or when they perceive little benefit from each candidate (alienation). The paper implements a unified model that captures the effect on voting behaviour of the candidates’ (perceived) positions along the ideological scale, non-spatial factors (valence and partisanship), citizens’ socio-demographic characteristics, their sensitivity to the political system and the mass media exposure. By applying this model to the 2008 national elections, the paper finds that the determinants of alienation and indifference differed considerably and that both the citizens’ ideology and individual thresholds affected the voting probability.
