Abstract:
This paper contributes to the literature on the regional systems of innovation focusing on the main obstacles to innovation for a group of potentially innovative Sicilian firms. We also show how innovative firms have a high perception of the obstacles to innovation, particularly of those external to the firm (infrastructure, bureaucracy, public services). Our estimates show the importance of economic barriers (lack of resources) in constraining process innovation. The econometric evidence finally shows the high degree of interdependence among the different types of innovation and the great relevance of organizational innovation in determining the innovative performance of Sicilian firms
