Abstract: My interest in the dimensions of regional economic development theory developed over a period of years as I searched for ways to organize my lectures in a graduate course in Rural Economic Development. I found that students were somewhat bewildered by the array of concepts, theories, hypotheses, models, and methods they were asked to absorb all under the title of rural development. At the same time, I hoped to understand a little better the relationship between regional economics, regional development, and rural economic development. This paper is the product of that search.
