Abstract:
The major objective of deliberate progress of a society is to guarantee human well-being through sustained improvement in people`s quality of life. Therefore, the development of human resources is crucial for sustained enlargement and productive employment. From this perspective, the North East India is a front line region of India and one of the most ethically and linguistically diverse regions in Asia, where each State of North Eastern Region (NER) has its distinct culture and traditions. Though the NER of India is rich in terms of human and natural resources, the region is backward in terms of socio-economic development and consequently wide disparity in terms of various indicators of social sector development. In the paper, an endeavour is made to measure the intra and inter-regional disparity in India using various statistical measures especially Data Envelopment analysis and Principal Component analysis. In the last part of the paper, an attempt is made to analyse the main factors influencing the social sector development in NER.
