Abstract:
Romania was among the countries severely hit by the global economic crisis and some long-lasting effects of the recession are still visible in the economy. The crisis has conveyed a new set of challenges for both national and regional labour markets, leading to negative adjustments, such as real wage decline and unemployment growth. In this context, our paper explores the changes in territorial dispersion of two major indicators of the labour market - average wage and unemployment rate. We cover a longer period of time and focus on the recent economic crisis, aiming to identify possible convergence in regional labour markets. Our main finding is a systematic divergence trend in average wages across Romanian counties over the period 1991 to 2013.
