Abstract: The term inflation, in a first phase, was related to currency, money later and is now commonly used to describe the prices. This change of paradigm seems to originate in a sequence of unfortunate events, but probably inevitable. The article presents the main theories that have led to the definition of the concept of "inflation" highlighting the successive acceptiile that economists – starting with those classics, contemporary of Adam Smith – they have assigned over time of this economic phenomenon.
