Some Reasons for Differences in State Performance across Countries

Abstract: This paper uses cross country regression analysis on an index of state failure and on its twelve component sub indexes to access the potential effect of the level of economic development, democracy, secularity, and market access on the extent of state failure. As a general proposition, the study finds that all of the variables are relevant for both overall state failure and with regard to the various components of state failure, with higher values for any of the variables associated with lower state failure.
