Abstract: This article discusses the need for increased attention to, and work with, the alcoholic in all agency settings; the role of the social worker in an al coholism clinic in relation to case finding, case study and case treatment; team work between psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists and social workers in meet ing the treatment needs of alcoholic patients; and the contributions social work can make to research in relation to alcoholism. It presents a discussion of social work techniques which are helpful when agencies must work with alcoholics not seeking help. The need for better informed teaching related to alcoholism, al cohol problems, and treatment both social and individual at our schools of social work is examined.
