Abstract: Electronics and computing are among the fastest-moving areas of science and engineering. The universities have played and will continue to play a major role in advancing the state of the art. Nowhere is it more important to be at the cutting edge of technology from the point of view of defense, and nowhere is academic research more rewarding. These areas illustrate well the cooperation that is possible between the Department of Defense and the universities when their interests coincide.
