Abstract: By comparing death and burial rituals in neighboring communities in western Mexico, much can be learned about civil society. Four communities are examined, two traditional and two in the process of change as they struggle with the influx of a sizable number of U.S. retirees as well as the growing number of Protestant church denominations that are appearing in the area.
