Abstract: ‘Death-Defying China’ is a thrilling account of the Bengali globetrotter Ramnath Biswas's travels through China on a bicycle in 1931. Biswas's descriptions of the tumultuous period of Chinese history, marked by civil wars and the Japanese occupation, are based on his interactions with diverse groups of Chinese people. This paper focuses on his encounters with the supporters of Chinese Communists, his experiences as a foreigner and his attempts to understand India and himself through his experiences in China.
