Abstract: This review essay explores the growth and community-based approaches to development. The books under review deepen our understanding of how community-based development works, what it means to those actually involved, and its potential as an oppositional political practice. Specifically, the essay discusses development and its relation to culture, empowerment, and social justice. Also discussed are the authors' innovative methodologies and researcher reflexivity.
