Comment: Regional versus Industrial Shift-Share Analysis

Abstract: Hoppes recently proposed a reformulation of the classic shift-share model for disaggregated use by local practitioners. His arguments ignore demand-pull considerations, and his alternative model implies that policymakers can dramatically alter the sectoral composition of the local economy in the medium term.
