Displaced Workers and Rural Entrepreneurship: A Four-State Study

Abstract: Some 1,128 rural new business entrepreneurs in Arkansas, Maine, Michigan, and North Dakota were interviewed to determine the role of displaced workers in starting businesses. The study compared displaced workers and other entrepreneurs, looking at business characteristics, operator characteristics, and numerous other measures. Displaced workers and others were found to be similar. The study concludes that special programs targeted at displaced workers in rural places are not warranted, but that more general programs serve their technical assistance needs.
