Abstract: This review of Jared Diamond's new book, Collapse , analyses the book in the context of other Malthusian treatments of environmental issues, noting its original and unconventional analysis of the role of environmental factors in the fate of past cultures, but critiquing its lack of imagination for the institutional dimensions of environmental decision-making for our future today.
