Abstract:
Higher energy use is closely linked to economic growth and social wealth. This “Viewpoint†puts forth the argument that it is not energy use as such that causes carbon-loading of the atmosphere. Higher energy use is not the problem, but rather one of the solutions to reducing anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. Energy trends are examined and evidence is provided showing that the costs of producing energy from high-carbon fuels are rising while those of producing energy from low-carbon fuels are declining. The greatest challenge of increasing energy use is the protection of the integrity of the biosphere while improving quality of life. Both are possible with higher energy use.
