Commercial Considerations of Industrial Energy Emissions Policy

Abstract: The presentation deals with environmental aspects of energy management from the perspective of the industrial consumer, and focuses on the commercial considerations that need to be taken into account in determining policies and selecting instruments to give effect to those policies. Acid rain is discussed only briefly since the main sources of pollution are power station flue gases and vehicle exhaust gases. Global warming is treated more extensively, beginning with a consideration of policy options. A review of the approaches available to reduce carbon dioxide emissions leads on to consideration of the opportunities for energy conservation in different sectors of the economy. The presentation ends with an assessment of the policy instruments available.
