Abstract: On 1 July 2012 the Australian Government's comprehensive carbon tax was levied on those businesses that produce more than 25 Mt annually of greenhouse gas emissions. The evidence justifying the need for such a tax is examined using the geological record, contemporary measurements and their interpretation.
