Photovoltaics in Africa and the gef: The Right Path to Sustainable Development?

Ian Bacon

Energy & Environment, 1998, vol. 9, issue 3, 257-277

Abstract: This paper explores the relevance of promoting photovoltaic (PV) projects within Africa by focusing on the issues arising from the GEF/Zimbabwe PV project 1992-1997. It questions the utility of such projects and the reasons for the continued promotion of this technology within Africa. It concludes that financial aid for PV technology needs to be thoroughly reviewed and redirected.
