Abstract:
A wide class of biological, demographic, economic, linguistic, and sociological phenomena have been observed to obey the Pareto distribution. This study is addressed to the question of why the observed distribution is what it is. A new formulation of the Pareto distribution is presented. The formulation accounts for the shape, slope, stability, and ubiquity of the Pareto distribution. The theory is further developed and illustrated, and its implications are discussed.
