Abstract: This paper responds to an essay by Dear entitled “The state: a research agenda†published in a special issue of Environment and Planning A on ‘the state, the law, and the spatial sciences’. The narrowness of Dear's proposed research programme is criticised, and two additional questions for students of the spatial sciences are raised: is a nonsectional state feasible, and to what extent could urban services be supplied by mutual aid rather than by governments or commercial interests?
