Abstract: In this paper the value of the Booming Towns approach to ranking local areas on the basis of their economic performance is assessed. More specifically, detailed methodological issues, such as the choice of appropriate areal units, the selection of indicator variables, and the manner of combining and ranking indicators to derive synthetic indices are discussed, with reference to possible alternative approaches.
