Abstract: An earlier article in this journal (Roy, 1974) explored an alternative multiple-criteria optimization condition in which relative goal satisfaction takes lexicographic priority over absolute goal achievement. The present paper attempts to clarify the implications of such an approach and to show that it can be a special case of a more general, fairly standard utility maximization model.
