National Power in the European Parliament as Mediated by the Party System

Abstract:
This paper develops from an earlier one which investigates aspects of national power in the forthcoming European Parliament by introducing the effect of the distribution of seats between parties. A three-stage analytical procedure is proposed which combines the power of national parties within European groups with the overall power of those groups. The results suggest that the current likely result for the UK is the worst possible in terms of national power.
