Abstract:
The paper is a sequel to a previous one, but is self-contained. It reintroduces orthogonal structures for the representation of loosely packed arrangements of rectangles (with some minor modifications) and ties up loose ends in the earlier paper. It introduces marked structures as an equivalent representation that is easier to implement. It specifies a collection of rules to generate labelled marked structures under very rigid requirements that make this collection interesting in a wide variety of contexts. Finally, the LOOS system is briefly outlined, a pilot version of a generative expert system for the design of architectural (and other) layouts that is based on this representation and utilizes the generation rules.
