Abstract: The aim of this study is to develop an operational computer-aided system for town planning. In Japan, many computer systems are employed for planning, but most of them have been developed from the perspective of data management. As such, systems are often installed in mainframe computers and databases are constructed on a large scale. They are not flexible enough for use as tools for town planning because of difficulty of access and of troublesome data maintenance. In this study, a computer-aided system is developed in consideration of simplicity of the data making process in order to assist planners in defining problems and preparing improvement schemes. This system has been installed in a microcomputer, and it uses digital town taps recorded on CD-ROM as base maps.
