Distance Measures over Polyomino Populations

Abstract: This paper presents a statistical survey of distance measures over n -omino populations for n ≤ 9. Three metrics are considered and compared: one Euclidean and two nonEuclidean metrics—taxicab and graph. The measures are taken at three levels of aggregation: intercellular, aggregate, and total for each polyomino. Statistics are given for each population group, and some cross-metric comparisons are made between the population groups. The paper concludes with a comment on the relevance of this kind of study to architectural and urban design.
