A Systems Approach to Modelling Urban Transport Networks as Part of the General Plan for a City

Abstract: This paper applies concepts of set and graph theory to the problems of designing a multi-mode transport network that will absorb the minimum amount of travel time for the urban population as a whole. Certain concepts are defined, including those of a quasi-order relation, a selection set, and a numeroid-absorbent structure, which are used in the construction of the models. A geometrical representation of the models is discussed, and a probability model of the route network itself is constructed expressing the reliability of routes for carrying imposed passenger loads in relation to the priorities that may operate in different parts of the system.
