Foreign Trade Review, 1999, vol. 34, issue 3-4, 10-32

Abstract: This paper explores the available databases on foreign exports from Karnataka State. And, the major characteristics and limitations of the available data for analysing the export performance of the State are highlighted. Further, the select policy factors, which influence the growth of exports from Karnataka, are described. The performance analyses show that:(a ) the role of exports has been increasing as reflected in the growing share and size of exports in the state income; (b) oft he commodities exported, manufactured goods occupy a major share and are followed by agriculture and allied products; and (c) the state public enterprises contribute a sizable share to total exports from the State. These results are useful, among others, in identifying the potential sectors and products, which may be accorded special and larger policy incentives at present and in future, 'especially within the framework of the ongoing national and State level economic reforms. Further, the experience of Karnataka in building up the database 011 foreign exports is of helpful guidance for other States in India, if they are yet to start in building such a database
