Women’s Body Bonded in Labour and Violence

Abstract: On 10 February 2021, a rape case of about a 22-year-old tribal woman worker from the district of Balangir was reported in the state of Telangana. The migrant woman worker was working in a brick kiln manufacturing unit and was gang raped by the brick kilns owners in Gourreddipeta in Peddapalli district. The case highlights the subjectivity of women and everyday forms of violence faced by women workers including sexual harassment and rape. It focuses on the intersectionality of vulnerability of class, ethnicity and gender issues. The article raises the myth of abolition of the bonded labour. It furthermore portrays the violation of various other acts such as the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979, the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and the Minimum Wages Act, 1948.
