Infrastructure Planning and Rural Development: Reflections on the Urban Functions Approach

Piet Rietveld

International Regional Science Review, 1990, vol. 13, issue 3, 249-255

Abstract: Location-allocation models and the urban functions approach should not be viewed as mutually exclusive alternatives. Location-allocation models can have a useful role within the broader urban functions approach to regional development planning. A more systematic treatment of the conflicting objectives inherent to regional planning and a better understanding of the effects of infrastructure on regional economies in developing countries both would be valuable in strengthening the urban functions approach.
