Labor Market Performance and Regional Types: A Conceptual Framework with Empirical Analysis of Austria

Abstract: The aim of this article is to shed light on regional differences in labor market performance. Using a cyclical-evolutionary approach, different types of regions with different economic potentials are distinguished. Arguments from segmented labor market theory are used to derive implications for the labor market performance of these regional types. A general pattern for regional labor market performance is developed by analyzing data on the rates, incidence, and duration of unemployment and vacancies for Austria.
