Struggle for Democracy in Myanmar: Response of Neighbours, United States and ASEAN

Abstract: The military rulers in Myanmar have ruled the country with an iron grip and with impunity, and are successful by brutally crushing the movements for democracy. The hard-pressed people of a desperately underdeveloped and isolated land with an overdeveloped military can win their liberation with the support of giant neighbours like India and China, the world super power United States and their own forum, ASEAN. But the successive generals in the country have succeeded because of the ‘accommodation’ and ‘engagement’ approach of these two regional powers and ASEAN and the tangential role of the US in the region. Economic, geo-strategic and political factors have complicated the situation, against which there is hardly any united, concrete or effective approach for the liberation of the people of the country.
