Abstract: The 1995 UN World Summitfor Social Development emphasised the importance of insuring human security and the active involvement ofpeople at the grass-roots level in the effort to solve worldwide problems of poverty, employment and social integration. This paper discusses ways in which psychologists can contribute to achieving these goals. Reference is made to psychologists'potential contributions of concepts and methodological approaches as well as their relevant knowledge and skills. Examples are included to illustrate past and potential contributions to attaining these objectives of (a) psychologically based programmes which are transculturally sensitive, and (b) psychologists' social and individual change expertise.
