Abstract: "It is the kind of policy-oriented research which we as an institution encourage: research which, in addition to generating knowledge with more immediate social utility, uses real-world concerns and applications to raise questions with important consequences for basic theory. We see a close and mutually beneficial relationship between basic and applied social science research with real situations and problems directing the scholar's attention to important and relevant extensions of theory.
