THE INTEGRATION OF SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND THEORY

Abstract: The lack of integration of research and theory has for long been the scandal of sociology. Today, however, grounds for optimism exist that some greater integration may be achieved, in particular through a collaborative alliance between sociologists engaged in the quantitative analysis of large-scale data-sets and in the deployment of rational action theory. These grounds are constituted by recent advances, which the paper reviews, indicating that sociologists are now better exploiting the resources both of modern statistics and of rational action theory for their own specific purposes.
