Abstract:
A new methodology for automated fault tree construction, based on a component-based approach for system modelling, and a trace-back algorithm for fault tree synthesis has been developed. This approach has been implemented as a computer program and tested on several simple examples and sample systems. In this paper a case study on a chemical plant is presented. The system modelling procedure and other details are discussed and the results are presented. The results generated by the program are then compared with a manually constructed fault tree. The complete match between the two fault trees verifies the validity of the program outputs.
