Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed women and girls to the risk of intimate partner violence. In Ghana not much is known about the experiences of victims of intimate partner violence during the pandemic. This paper explores the experiences of intimate partner violence among Ghanaian women and girls during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data for the study was obtained from in-depth interviews with nine victims of intimate partner violence. The findings indicate that victims’ experiences of violence during the pandemic were slightly different from the pre-pandemic ones, and that gender inequalities were heightened during the pandemic. We recommend that pandemic response should include violence prevention components such as financial support to women of low socioeconomic groups.
