‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way’: The Supply Chain of MARVI Project, HANDS

Abstract: This case study concerns supply chain of a project ‘MARVI’. The acronym MARVI stands for ‘The Marginalized Areas RH (Reproductive Health) and FP (Family Planning) Viable Initiatives’. This project, funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, was started by Health and Nutrition Development Society (HANDS), a Karachi-based integrated development NGO. This project was designed to pilot an integration of RH and FP with rural support programmes in Umerkot district, which is one of the most remote and poorest districts of Sindh, Pakistan. The modus operandi of this project is to operate in collaboration with other NGOs in the district through developing a community-based model of social marketing of RH and FP products. The macro objectives of this project are to increase awareness and positive RH and FP behaviours to improve the life of people in the district. For this project, HANDS team came up with a non-conventional method to reach out the community to supply the RH and FP products in the difficult economic, cultural and physical environment of the Umerkot district.  This case can be taught in Supply Chain, NGO Management, Reproductive Health and Family Planning disciplines.
