Abstract:
This article makes a general assessment of India's perceptions of and responses to the rise of China. There exist three schools of perceptions and responses: those who view China as a benign power and prefer an appeasement approach to it, those who regard China as a threatening power and propose a containment-cum-encirclement policy, and those who consider China as a competitive power and favour a balanced engagement strategy. The assessment is focused on the mainstream school of thought (which perceives China as a competitive power and responds with balanced engagement) on several dimensions of China's rise, its economic growth and military build-up in particular.
