Abstract: In the present contribution, I would like to describe modes of care for people who, because of their mental health problems, need the continuing or occasional help of different institutions (Ramon, 1990). Some service structures are described which are the most outstanding. The history and organisation of relevant institutions, as well as possibilities for the improvement of their work, or alternatively their abolition, are also discussed.
