Abstract: A new method for calculating a status index from the sociometric structure of a small group is suggested. The limitations of previous indices are discussed, and it is shown how the new index circumvents the problems encountered by them. Research using the new index shows that it does measure social status at least to the extent that a person's score in the upward-positive personal ity direction on a modified Interpersonal Rating Scale indicates social status. The substantive nature of the concept of attenuation is also discussed.
