Abstract: It is argued that attracting more tourists will stimulate domestic consumption. This paper, using Granger causality tests fitted to data from Hong Kong, shows that a long-term causal relationship between the number of tourists and subsequent private domestic consumption is not supported. Thus, tourist flows may have very little effect on domestic consumption.
