Incentives of International and Local Hotel Chains to Invest in Environmental Quality

Aleix Calveras

Tourism Economics, 2003, vol. 9, issue 3, 297-306

Abstract: This paper examines the extent to which the incentive of hotel chains to invest in environmental quality is dependent on whether they are locally or internationally well established. The author shows that there are two factors which give an international chain less incentive than a local chain to invest in the maintenance of the local environment: the ‘public good’ characteristic of environmental quality and the fact that the nature of the environment is a key factor in a destination's international competitive advantage.
