Abstract: This article reviews issues and recent European initiatives in the area of financial participation of employees. Taking a broadly positive of the advantages of such schemes, it draws attention to differences between firms in different sectors and of different size, and to heterogeneous worker preferences. All initiatives in this area should be sufficiently flexible to take account of this and should be based on the principle of voluntarism.
