Abstract:
Korea has experienced rapid simultaneous urbanisation and industrialisation leading to a high level of con centration of population and economic activity in Seoul. The structure of the economy of Seoul is described. The need for policies to achieve decentralisation is examined and the implications of such policies are listed. The paper identifies those sectors which are likely to be most suitable for relocation away from the capital. Finally, by using input-output tabulations and multipliers, the paper is able to measure the probable total impact of such decentralisation and the relative costs and benefits of such a process.
