Advanced Technology Industry in Oxfordshire: Location of Markets and Competitors

Helen Lawton Smith

Urban Studies, 1991, vol. 28, issue 2, 205-218

Abstract: This paper provides evidence of the spatial extent of market fields of advanced technology establishments in Oxfordshire. While the UK is the major sales area, over two-thirds of the firms export some, and a third sell most, of their output abroad. Foreign owned firms are more likely to export to Europe and the US than UK owned firms, both single site and multi-site. Competition comes mainly from outside the UK, and tends not to be from the same countries to which the establishments export.
